LEAN NOT ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING
. - written by Tanis Harms
TOPIC: trust & obey God
SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 3:5-6
Style: satire/spoof on Simon Says game: narrator
. who is "it" gives different scenarios.
. Based on the chosen actions,
. the “players” move accordingly.
Cast: Narrator, PERSON 1, 2, 3 or Groups 1, 2, 3
SCRIPT:
(The kids/adults/groups clump together
in the middle of the stage.
NARRATOR enters and motions out a “finish line”
at one end of the stage.)
NAR. This is the finish line.
. There are rewards for anyone reaching it.
. Challenge one!
. You overhear Mary Jane gossip about you.
. Simon says, and your gut says,
. march right up to her
. and give her a piece of your mind.
. If you would do that, take a step back.
(GROUP 1 takes a step back with a non-caring attitude.
GROUP 2 wonders about this.
GROUP 3 shakes their heads, showing tender disagreement
with this course of action.)
NAR. BUT what if,
. you learned what God says,
. to pray about the situation,
. and go to Mary Jane in private and in love,
. and try to work things out peaceably.
. If you would do that, take a step forward.
(GROUP 3 takes a compassionate step forward.
GROUP 2 still wonders, and stays where they are.)
NAR. If you do not choose one of these,
. you HAVE chosen NOT to do anything.
. Take a step to the left.
(Confused, GROUP 2 steps to the right.)
NAR. Challenge two! 2
. You have a test to take.
. If you pass, you will get into a great college
. and get a great job.
. Simon says, and your gut says,
. find a way to cheat
. because it’s the only way to get ahead.
. If you would do that, take a step back.
(GROUP 1 takes a step back with a haughty attitude.
GROUP 2 & 3 stand their ground, thinking.)
NAR. God says, lying is wrong and working hard is right.
. If you trust what God says,
. you would obey and decide to study hard
. and try your best - take a step forward.
(GROUP 3 takes a definite step forward.
GROUP 2 stands still, wondering.)
NAR. If you do not choose one of these,
. you HAVE chosen NOT to do anything,
. you do NOT study and you just HOPE for the best.
. Take a step to the left AND slightly backwards.
(GROUP 2 takes a step to the left and backwards.)
NAR. Challenge three!
. You are walking down the street
. and notice some kids picking on a beggar.
. Simon says, and your gut says,
. it’s best NOT to get involved
. because you yourself could get hurt.
. If you would choose NOT to do anything,
. because you just don’t care at all,
. take a step back.
(GROUP 1 takes a step back with a roll of their eyes.)
NAR. God says, be compassionate
. and help defend the poor and afflicted.
. If you did care,
. but did nothing except pray,
. take a step slightly forward and to the right.
(GROUP 2 takes a careful step slightly forward
and to the right.
GROUP 3 puts their hands to their mouths,
deep in thought.)
NAR. If you hear what God says, and obey Him, 3
. you would care about the poor and afflicted,
. pray for them and the situation,
. AS WELL AS try to safely help –
. like phoning the police – take a step forward.
(GROUP 3 takes a step forward to reach the finish line.
They give each other high-fives and shake hands.
If it’s just one PERSON, then shake hands with NARRATOR.)
NAR. (turns to congregation) God says in Proverbs 3:5-6
. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
. and do not lean on your own understanding.
. In all your ways acknowledge Him,
. and He will make your paths straight.”
